MSP430FR6989: What are the Security violations which cause a BOR?

Part Number: MSP430FR6989

There are just a couple of places in the user guide and data sheet where security is discussed, but they do not answer my question.

I'm interested in which security faults cause a BOR. The data sheet, on page 85 of data sheet (SLAS789D), says that a security violation interrupt will cause a BOR. The operation modes diagram, on page 57 of the user guide (SLAU367P), points out that a security violation causes a BOR. But those events are not published anywhere where I can find them.

What are the Security violations which cause a BOR?

Do those events cause a flag to be set?

  • Hi Thomas,

Thanks again for your detailed question and for referencing the datasheet and user's guide!

Like you've observed, the details about security violations are scarce in the FR5xx/6xx documentation unfortunately, so I'll submit a request to add more details.

Security violations seem to be mainly caused by memory access violations. For example, Section 1.2 Reset and Initialization in the MSP430x5xx and MSP430x6xx Family User's Guide indicates that a security violation triggers a BOR when protected areas of memory such as the protected BSL, boot code, etc. are accessed. I see that this information was added to this user's guide in a later revision, but I'm not sure why it wasn't updated in the FR5xx/6xx user's guide. Incorrect DMA settings can also indirectly trigger a security violation by accessing these protected areas of memory.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,

    James

Not sure if it is the only cause of security violations, but attempting to read certain BSL ROM addresses can cause a security violation which then leads to a reset. MSP430FR2153: MSP430FR235x datasheet doesn't show the BSL ROM address in the Memory Organisation has some notes about investigations into that.

MSP430 Random Resets with 'Security Violation (BOR)' has some more information.
