MSP430FR5969: Debug issue in CCS

Part Number: MSP430FR5969

Hi Team,

Posting for our customer. They are currently using the MSP-FET430UIF debugger to flash MSP430FR5969 but they are encountering this error in CCS: "ERROR] MSP430: Error initializing emulator: No USB FET was found"

I understand the MSP-FET430UIF is already discontinued and no longer recommended for new designs but due to the current restrictions on our customer's end they have to work with this debugger as of the moment. Can you help us on possible root cause and fixes of this issue?

Attaching device manager snippet for reference.

Thanks in advance!

Kind Regards,

Jejomar

  • Hello,

Are they using a USB hub? If so, it's not recommended. Have they tried creating a new workspace in CCS or updating their version of CCS? Does this happen with all boards or just some? What JTAG interface are they using? Does it match the circuitry described in the MSP Hardware Tools User's Guide?

    Regards,

    James

  • Attaching device manager snippet for reference.

The device manager shows the MSP-FET430UIF is showing up as a "MSP-FET430UIF - VCP" device, which means it is running old V2 firmware.

MSP-FET430UIF running V3 firmware shows up as a "MSP-FET430UIF - CDC" device. In theory, CCS under Windows should be able to upgrade a MSP-FET430UIF from a VCP to a CDC device, but in CCS 9 someone found that didn't work for them.

A workaround in CCS/MSP430FR2433: Unable to us MSP-FETU430IF with CCSv9 was to upgrade the MSP-FETU430IF using MSPFlasher, which then allowed it to be used with CCS.
