Can MSP432 be used for Real time Video processing?

Hi,

I need to save the data from a spy camera whose output is a 1280x960 NTSC signal. I plan to use an NTSC/PAL decoder (like TVP5150AM for eg.) to get digital values. Lets say I skip the CODEC/compression part for now and I want to start saving this digital raw data into an SD card as it comes. Is this board fast enough to do that?

From a quick look at the TVP5150AM datasheet, the YOUT (ITU-R BT.656 output/YCbCr 4:2:2 output with discrete syncs) is an 8 bit output clocked at 34.48MHz.

Given the MSP432 has a maximum CPU clock of 48MHz I would say a MSP432 wouldn't be able to keep up with the digital raw data rate.

In that case what do you suggest i use? I mean microcontrollers are surely not an option rit?. May be a DSP like in TMS series?

And what if I use DSP SIMD (www.arm.com/.../dsp-simd.php ? Will that help?

As well as the DaVinci Video Processors mentioned above by Ilmars, there are other ARM based TI processors with built in hardware support for video input.

E.g. the AM437x TRM shows support for ITU-R BT.656 video input, which is the format for your suggested TVP5150AM NTSC/PAL decoder.

There are also OMAP processors with video input.

How about TMS320DM6431 or TMS320DM365 ? Its ARM9. Is it a good option. Forgive me for lack of knowledge, but I am new to video processing.

Both of those devices have video input, so maybe would fit your requirements.

To be honest, I haven't actually done video processing either so am not in a position to say which device is a "good option" for your application. Suggest you ask on the DaVinci™ Video Processors forum to get better advice.
