Temperature, Humidity and Communication MCU

Hi All,

I hope everything is going well.

I have a very simple application--basically I need 3 temperature and 2 humidity inputs, and need to control 2 relays based on the input values (Need 9 such systems). Also, I need to communicate the temperature and humidity data, as well as the status of the relays (on/off) to a Master controller, from where that data should be readable via a Dashboard or some sort of GUI.

Which MCUs will be suitable for this project? Which communication protocol should be used? Simply the CAN protocol? Or Modbus TCP? Or some other?

I have never actually worked on a professional level with a MCU, so really need some advice.

Hi,

most of what you're asking for depends on your system requirements. Those would include the necessary sampling rate of your sensor inputs and its resolution, equally your requirements for the output (to control the relays) and the communication.

However, you could start with looking at our microcontroller product page to see what kind of microcontroller families we offer. Those are also linked to certain target applications which could help you to find the best match to your application.

Thanks Britta. I have made some choices for the sensors:

Both have i2c communication, which is very desirable.

I am inclined towards using the following MCU as the HOST:

www.ti.com/.../

Now, can you please tell me if the above mentioned MCU is capable of Modbus TCP communication? It has the ethernet capability.

Lastly, can you please show some MCUs which have i2c, as well as ethernet? So that they can be integrated with the sensors, and communicate via Modbus too.

Please provide with some feedback/recommendations.

Also, how are these MCUs programmed? Do I need to purchase some kits to burn the code?

Hello Qasim,

MSP432E4 is capable of doing Modbus operations. However we don't have any working example with Modbus.

To get started, the software from the following TI-Design can be reviewed. It is built on lwIP which is also supported on MSP432E4. www.ti.com/.../TIDA-00226

Like any other TI MCU, the development boards for these MCUs are called LaunchPads. Please visit the following page for details about the MSP432E4 LaunchPad: www.ti.com/.../msp-exp432e401y

The Debug interface on the LaunchPads can be used to program these MCUs. In addition there are a number of programming tools that can be used to program. You can start by referring to this page for details about some of these tools: www.ti.com/.../tools-software.html
