DRV10983: Can the driver handle a BLDC motor with the Phase resistance of 18.9Ohms

Hi,

I am trying to find out some information regarding DRV10983 sensorless bldc driver IC

we have a motor which has a phase-phase resistance of 18.9 OHM @ 25C.

Can this driver IC be used to drive this motor. the motor winding temperature can increase to about 50C in certain cases... how will it affect the performance of this driver... are there some cases we need to be concerned about. the motor will be used as a pump (medical device)

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your message back.

We have a design where the motor is expected to have a continuous current of less than 0.2A. The phase to phase resistance as you can see in the datasheet is 39.8Ohms when warmed up.

Are we going to be OK using this driver given how long the continuous current is?

Clarifying the above questions - Are we going to be OK if the continuous current is low while the phase to phase resistance is 39.8Ohms?

Hello Kamesh,

The continuous current is configurable with a max of 2A, there is a 200mA setting so you should not have any problems with this specification. As far as the 39.8 ohms versus the device spec of 38 ohms for phase-phase resistance, even though this specification is slightly out of range it does not mean that you will not be able to spin your motor using the DRV10983. This specification is just a recommended range where we typically see optimal performance, what this means for your motor is that you might not be able to achieve its peak advertised performance such as the highest available motor speed. We typically suggest following the DRV10983 Tuning Guide to ensure that you have setup the device correctly and place yourself in a position to get the best available performance possible.
