DRV8323: DRV8232

Part Number: DRV8323
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8353

DRV8232 is getting heated abnormally, even when no motor is connected.

We supplied 48V and connected to the MOSFET's  and motor. Initially motor is working fine. After sometimes we observed that, the torque is getting  less and gradually motor stops working.

  • Hi Sumia,

We do not recommend using the DRV8323 with 48-V. We recommend no larger than 24-V. You will get high power dissipation from the DVDD regulator, charge pump, and VGLS regulators.

Does the PCB use the thermal pad to dissipate temperature across multiple layers of the PCB, use direct connect vias, and PCB have sufficient copper thickness?
What is the IDRIVE settings used, and have you had any issues with driving FETs? Sometimes too high of an IDRIVE setting causes more current dissipation from the charge pump and results in more power dissipation.

    Thanks,
    Aaron

  • Hi Sumia,

Following up on this item -

    1. agreed with Aaron's comments that the DRV8232 is probably not sufficiently rated to handle 48V operating voltage for Vm/Vdrain.
    2. We have a similar part named DRV8353 that is rated for up to 100V maximum voltage, which may be more appropriate for your application's 48V operation.
      1. note that the parts are similar, but not pin-to-pin replaceable, so there will need to be some slight reconfiguration to integrate this new device into your design
      2. however, DRV8353 will have many of the same features as DRV8323 (integrated buck regulator, 3x integrated CSAs, and the option of SPI or HW interface)

From your initial comments about system working fine initially, but then gradually breaking down over time:

Please let us know if this information resolves your problem

    Thanks and Best Regards,
    Andrew
