DRV8306: A4915 Replacement

Part Number: DRV8306
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV832X, DRV8323, DRV8353

Hello Sir,

My customer’s product is an electric power tool. They now use A4915 on their products.

The specification requirement of their motor Driver IC is that they only need to send one PWM signal to operate. Sometimes the peak current of the MOSFET (ID) can reach 60A~100A.

The customer's BLDC is 18V or 36V.

I introduced DRV8306 to the customer, and he replied that the gate driver current of DRV8306 is only 15mA and it is not enough. He hopes to be at least 650mA and preferably above 1A.
Does TI have Motor Driver products that meet customer specifications?

Best Regards,

Kami Huang

  • Hi Kami,

Thanks for reaching out through the motor drivers E2E forum!

The team is currently out of office for holiday break and will return first week of Jan 2022.

    As a preliminary response,

    • what control technique is your system looking for? Trap/Sine/FOC?

Two devices that you may want to consider are DRV835x (102V part) and DRV832x (65V part)

    • these devices operate at up to 1A source 2A sink gate-drive current w/ smart-gate-drive functionality
    • also supports 1xPWM mode w/ trapezoidal logic
    • options for SPI interface or HW interface,
    • options for with/without buck regulator, with/without 3x current-shunt amplifiers
    • the device is external-FET, so you can use this device with an external power MOSFET that meets your 60-100A requirements

  • Hello Andrew,

I am not familiar with motor drives. I have questions and need your help. My customer told me that A4915 can rotate the motor without inputting the control waveform. Can DRV8323/DRV8353 also work? How to set Pin?

    Best Regards,

    Kami Huang

  • Hi Kami,

You can use 1x PWM mode of DRV832x/DRV835x to use commutation table stored internally in the device. IDRIVE settings allow up to 1-A source current and 2-A sink current. You can set 1x PWM mode via SPI (PWM_MODE = 10b) or Hardware (MODE pin = Hi-Z).

    Thanks,
    Aaron
