DRV8412: OC Latching

Part Number: DRV8412

Based on Section 7.4 from the DRV8412 datasheet, it appears that only Mode 2 features an OC latching shutdown.

However, the response to the linked E2E forum post suggests that OC latching shutdown occurs in all operating modes (#1-4).

https://e2e.ti.com/support/motor-drivers-group/motor-drivers/f/motor-drivers-forum/1000165/drv8412-fault-behavior-in-case-of-overcurrent-shutdown-with-cbc-or-oc-latching-shutdown?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=DRV8412%252520OC%252520LATCHING%252520SHUTDOWN#

Can you please clarify if OC latching shutdown is enabled for all modes, or just Mode 2?

Thank you!

  • Will,

It is a little confusing, but latching can occur in the other modes if a LEVEL 2 threshold is reached while in CBC mode.

This implies that CBC is trying to work normally under a normal load condition like driving a motor, but a hard short occurs on the outputs while in CBC regulation.  CBC would not be able to control the current and it will "run away".  At that point, device will hit level 2 and latched the output off to protect the device.

    Regards,

    Ryan
