DRV8353R: VCP or VGLS (GDUV) Fault

Part Number: DRV8353R

We are getting a Status word 2, bit 6 fault "VCP or VGLS (GDUV) Fault" which is always present. This means that 0040h is present on SPI SDO register 1h whenever queried under normal motor operation (38vdc). This randomly and occasionally turns into a real fault where DRV shutdown occurs. The status word (2) then shows additional fault bits 0041 or 0042 or 0044h. Status word 2 then becomes 0500h (FAULT and Gate Drive Fault). How can we eliminate this?

Present IDRIVEs = 0011, TDRIVE = 10, DEADTIME = 11, Vbus = 38vdc.

  • Hi Steve,

Thank you for posting to the Motor Drivers forum!

The reason the VCP or VGLS (GDUV) Fault is occurring is because either the voltage on the VCP pin (charge pump) is falling below the VVCP_UV threshold or voltage on the VGLS pin is falling below the VVGLS_UV threshold.

To verify that this is happening, monitor the VM, GHx, VCP and VGLS waveforms and check to see if any under-voltage or “dips” occur.

Section 9. High side or Low side pre-driver undervoltage (VCPUV, VGLS dip, GDUV) of the following FAQ is a great resource on debugging this issue: Quick Guide to Debugging Common Issues in BLDC motor drivers.

    Best,

  • I sent voltage traces according to your requests but got no comments back. My issue is resolved but in line with the directions I received.
