MCF8315EVM: Cannot update firmware for MCF8315/6 EVM with MSP430 launchpad...

Part Number: MCF8315EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UNIFLASH

Hi Team,

My customer failed to update the MCF8315/6 EVM with the MSP430 launchpad that the user guide mentioned.

At the start, the D6 LED on EVM is on, then executes CCS and try to connect the MCF8316EVM,

the error message shows "TI MSP430 USB1/MSP430 : Target must be connected before loading program".

Try to connect target some times, the D6 will be off and the error is still.

Try to update MCF8315EVM and had same issue but the D6 kept turn on.

Please help on it.

Thanks.

  • Hi Peter,

Could you please help make sure that the jumper wire connection between the MSP430 LaunchPad and the MCF8315EVM is correct as shown below:

Instead of using CCS, you can also follow the instruction in this E2E FAQ to program the firmware using the online Uniflash tool.

    Regards,

    Eric C.

  • Hi Eric,

Thanks for your help. the firmware update was done.

Customer updated the firmware for motor studio and while power on, the D7 LED turned on, which means the firmware is the new version.

However, they could not connect MCF831x EVM with Motor Studio, but connecting with EVM GUI is OK.

    Can you help on it?

    Thanks.

  • Hi Peter,

Could you please ask the customer to try closing the Motor Studio, re-plugging in the EVM USB (try a different USB port), and restarting the GUI?

There is a bug in the GUI where it sometimes fails to identify USB serial ports after launching. The workaround is to restart a few times, and usually it connects after a couple tries. Please also ensure the old GUI or any other application that may access the serial port is closed since they may conflict in opening the serial port with the Motor Studio.

    Regards,
    Eric C.

  • Hi Eric,

The customer already connected the EVM with motor studio and finished the tuning.

May I know how to export the customer setting from Motor Studio? Does it support this function or not?

    Thanks.

  • Hi Peter,

You can save the register settings using File menu -> "Save registers" to store the registers into a JSON file.

Please note that it saves whatever is configured in the GUI. So please make sure to go to Register Map page and perform a "Read All" registers action to ensure that the settings are synced up between the GUI and the EVM before saving registers.

    Regards,
    Eric C.
