MCF8316A: How to connect MCF8316A and MSP-EXP430FR2355

Hi,

I am considering using MSP-EXP430FR2355 as a way to debug MCF8316A mounted on a custom board.

Is there anything else I need to do to debug besides updating the firmware on MSP-EXP430FR2355? Also, is I2C the only cable that connects MSP-EXP430FR2355 and MCF8316A? Please let me know if there are any other cables that need to be connected.

The only connections required to communicate with the MCF8316A is the I2C lines, we also recommend connecting the LaunchPad GND to AGND of the MCF8316A.

Unless you plan on using Motor Studio, only the firmware on the MSP430 needs to be updated.

If you plan on using Motor Studio with the MSP-EXP430FR2355, Motor Studio expects a very fast baud rate which requires the resonator for the MSP430 that is on the MCF8316AEVM.

Also, if I want to verify operation with Motor Studio, should I write the following firmware?

Sorry for the confusion. The CCS project in the following E2E FAQ is a stand alone code which requires the user to manually input their desired register configuration into an array. https://e2e.ti.com/support/motor-drivers-group/motor-drivers/f/motor-drivers-forum/1246892/faq-program-mcx-bldc-motor-driver-through-i2c-using-msp430-launchpad.This code does not work with either the Motor Studio GUI or the older dev.ti.com GUI.

The firmware which will allow the MSP430 to work with a GUI is provided either on the devices (MCF8316A) product page on ti.com or in this E2E FAQ: https://e2e.ti.com/support/motor-drivers-group/motor-drivers/f/motor-drivers-forum/1281363/faq-motor-studio-gui---evm-firmware-compatibility

There are two firmware .out files linked in the above E2E FAQ, one is the Motor Studio firmware and the other is the old dev.ti.com GUI firmware.

Yes, the firmware you linked is the firmware required for the MSP430FR2355 to connect to Motor Studio.
