DRV8873-Q1: Possibility of connecting multiple outputs to increase the load current

Part Number: DRV8873-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8873, DRV8145-Q1

Tool/software:

Hello,

I wonder if it is possible to connect multiple outputs or entire DRV8873 modules to increase the load current?
For example, combining two outputs OUT1 and OUT2 of one DRV8873-Q1 system and high-side control to increase the maximum load current.
Or connecting two separate DRV8873-Q1 modules in parallel?

Best Regards,

  • Hey Bartosz,

Yes that should be doable with the device's Independent 1/2 Bridge mode.  Note that as the datasheet doesn't specifically have a "Parallel" mode you will need to manually make sure to avoid a shoot-through condition.  I recommend also tying together IN1 and IN2 so that there won't be any timing difference between the inputs.

See this post for an example schematic doing what you propose: (+) DRV8873: how to maximum the DRV8873's current ability? - Motor drivers forum - Motor drivers - TI E2E support forums They also added inline inductors to help reduce the severity of shoot-through in case OUT1 turns on slightly before/after OUT2, I would recommend this.

Is this a new project?  If so, I highly recommend looking at DRV8962 or DRV8145-Q1 (or lower current versions DRV8144/43) - they are more recently released devices with higher current capability than DRV8873, I think you will be able to achieve what you want without needing to parallel outputs and they should be very price competitive.

    Best,

    Jacob

  • Hey Jacob,

Thank you very much for this information, it is very useful. Yes, it's a new design and I think we'll probably use the new DRV8145-Q1 series instead.

    Best regards,
