DRV8301: Inquiry about DRV8301 Compatibility with 13S 48V Battery, 48V 2kW Motor, and CSD18563Q5A MOSFETs

Part Number: DRV8301
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CSD18563Q5A

Tool/software:

Dear Texas Instruments Support Team ,

I am reaching out to inquire about the compatibility of the DRV8301 motor driver with a 13S lithium-ion battery setup, which has a nominal voltage of 48V and a maximum fully charged voltage of approximately 54.6V. Additionally, I am using a 48V 2kW motor in this configuration.

Could you please confirm if this setup falls within the safe operational limits of the DRV8301? I am particularly concerned about the potential effects of voltage spikes that may occur during operation. Could these spikes impact the performance or longevity of the DRV8301, and would you recommend any additional protection for this setup?

Additionally, I plan to use two CSD18563Q5A MOSFETs in parallel to help reduce the current. Could you confirm if this MOSFET model is suitable for my application in conjunction with the DRV8301?

If the DRV8301 is not the optimal choice for this application, could you suggest an alternative IC that might be more suitable for ensuring stable performance and minimizing voltage-related issues?

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards,

  • Hi Ahmed,

Thank you for reaching out on our forum!

I believe the DRV8301 should be adequate from the information given, however for a full analysis it would be helpful to discuss your system parameters (max current,  pwm, current sensing, driving algorithms, etc)

Could these spikes impact the performance or longevity of the DRV8301, and would you recommend any additional protection for this setup?

The DRV8301 is rated for an Abs-max voltage of 65V, so as long as sufficient bulk capacitance and supporting circuitry (like snubbers) are used, then there should be no issue.

Additionally, I plan to use two CSD18563Q5A MOSFETs in parallel to help reduce the current. Could you confirm if this MOSFET model is suitable for my application in conjunction with the DRV8301?

From a quick overview it believe this selection of msofet is sufficient (High drain current capability,  low QGD for fast rise/fall times) however I would recommend the MOSFETs to have a maximum rated voltage above that of the driver's abs max (65V) as transients can grow very large.

To better help in your MOSFET selection,  please refer to this FAQ guide: https://e2e.ti.com/support/motor-drivers-group/motor-drivers/f/motor-drivers-forum/1238968/faq-how-to-determine-which-mosfets-a-gate-driver-can-support

I hope this information is helpful!

    Best Regards,
