DRV8841: Why DRV8871 is not suitable for solenoid driving

Dear Sir/Madam,

When looking at TI motor control brochures, I noticed that it mentioned DRV8841/8842 is suitable for solenoid driving but DRV8871 is not. Why is the reason?

my end application is for safety device, and PCB size is small. So reluctance to use DRV8841/8842 although they are good however the size is quite big. What would be the pros and cons if I use DRV8871/72 for driving solenoid?

How do you intend to drive the solenoid? (enable the ouputs on with no current regulation, enable the outputs with current regulation, or PWM the inputs at high frequency) If PWM at high frequency, what duty cycles would be used?

hi Rick,

Using bistable latching solenoid, it needs pulse actuation in both direction. Thus it will fall under push-pull driver category.

Hi kpk,

Assuming the voltage and current requirements can be met with the DRV8871/2, it should be able to control a bistable latching solenoid.

We are still investigating why the selection guide say no for Solenoids.
