DRV10983: DRV10983 EVM Damaged after first power on

Part Number: DRV10983

Hello,

I am seeing an exactly similar issue - 3.3V (Vreg) and Gnd get shorted after a power cycle the board a couple of times. Lost about 5 chips so far and cannot understand what is happening. What was the solution to this thread ? This is not an EVM but a board that I have created based on the reference design. I had one board work for a day after which that one gave up on some power cycle (24V power cycle)

Any pointers will help

-Ajay

  • Hey Ajay,

We've heard of this issue occuring on the DRV10983Z (Sleep Mode) parts but never the DRV10983. Is the DRV10983Z used in your design?

If so, pease refer to the Application Information section in the DRV10983 datasheet. The section illustrates that a Zener diode must be placed on the VREG pin to prevent this issue. The Diode's specifications are shown in the expernal components table later in the section.

Otherwise, we need to start investigating to find the root cause. Can you please offer a schematic and layout for us to review? Or can you provide some waveforms of VCC, VREG, and V3P3 during this situation? How do you know VREG is shorted during this operation?

  • Hello Cole,
Thanks for your immediate response. After some internal review we realized that the value of the inductor connected to SW was incorrect and we changed it to 47u - 1.2A Isat. That seems to have given a pause to the Vcc - Gnd short at startup on at least one board. We feel that this could be start but we are not sure. We shall replicate it on a 3-4 boards and then conclude. However motor is not spinning just yet. But thanks for helping us in this stage

  • Hey Ajay,

Let me know if there is anything else I can do. I'm glad you've gotten some progress.

  • Hello Cole,

Yeah so motor is rotating OK now. However we are trying to bring up the SMPS recommended in the application and the transformer is having a discrepancy. I have created another  query for that on the portal but not getting any response for the same. Any help on that front will be appreciated.

    Thanks
