DRV8703-Q1: Reverse Supply Protection Circuit function

Part Number: DRV8703-Q1

Hi,

There's few description on page 37 of DRV8703-Q1 datasheet. Can you explain the function of below circuit in the red circle? The N-MOSFET and VCP should be able to achieve reverse supply protection.

Many thanks.

Brian Zhao

  • Hi Brian,

The circled components are there to limit the voltage at the gate the of N-MOSFET in a reverse supply condition.

If the supply is connected in reverse, VM is ground and GND is now the supply voltage.

The voltage on GND can pass through a three body diodes to reach VCP (the body diode of the low side FETs shown in Figure 29, the body diodes from SHx to GHx and the bodys diode from GHx to VCP shown in Figure 37).

The voltage would then enable the protection N-MOSFET if the npn was not placed in the circuit to limit the voltage at the gate of the protection N-MOSFET.
