DRV8848: use DRV8848 drive unipolar stepper

Part Number: DRV8848

Hi, our customer is using DRV8848 to drive an unipolar stepper as below block diagram.

There is no problem in function, but is there a problem with ability?

Please help to check, thank you!

  • Rui,

The block diagram isn't shown. Also, do you have more detail about the problem?
  • The unipolar stepper specifications is showed below:

    Supply voltage is 12V.

    Phase current is 0.23A.

Two phase excitation control mode is used. I am sure this control function can be realized. But I am worried about any problem about reliability.

    Thank you

  • Rui,

If you use 6 wire unipolar motor and leave the center tap wires float, the motor driver connection is same as a bipolar motor. So, I don't have any reliability concern on it.

If you use 5 wire unipolar motor ( the center tap wires are connected together to the input voltage), the motor driver control has to be full step and disable the current regulation. The motor and motor driver may be too hot.
  • Li,
5 wire unipolar motor is used by customer. Why current regulation must be disable?
    Thank you for your assistance
  • Rui,

If the coil current reach the regulation point, motor drive would run into some decay mode which has different FET turn-on/off status and different current flow as your expectation.
