There are several options for how the device behaves when a VDS fault has occurred and how the device recovers depending on if you are using a hardware (H version) or SPI (S version) of the device.
Please see section 8.3.8.7 of the datasheet.
If you select the latched mode or cycle-by-cycle mode, the external FET gates will be pulled to GND and the H-bridge will be disabled. If the motor is running, any current will flow through the body diodes of the FETs and into the supply. You just need to ensure that there is another decoupling on the supply to avoid an over-voltage condition on the DRV8705-Q1 device.
If you select the "warning report only mode", you can take your own action on the inputs of the device and choose to brake the motor first if you prefer.
