BQ25798: MPPT with Battery Balance Charging?

Part Number: BQ25798
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ29330

Hello,

I'm working on a battery charger with:

  • 4.4--5V @ <0.5A solar input power
  • Supporting 2S1P--4S2P Li-Ion or Li-Po battery pack
  • Deliver continuous output power of 14--18V @ <6A
  • -40--125C or better
  • I2C host interface with configuration & sensor data logging

I need to have both MPPT & battery balancing as features for efficiency & safety requirements.

I'm currently using the BQ25798.  It meets my needs, except for the battery balancing.

I've searched TI & other sources several times & not found a better solution.  Is there another way to partition my project using TI products that would meet all of the requirements, including battery balancing (such as an MPPT voltage regulator or source feeding a balancing battery charger)?

Thank you very much for your feedback!

  • Hi Gary,

TI does not have a single IC charger plus 4S battery balancing.  At a minimum, you will need two ICs.  In addition, to BQ25798, I recommend taking a look at BQ29330 balancer.

    Regards,
    Jeff

  • Thank you for your response, Jeff.

I should have been more clear.  Does TI have any low-voltage MPPT voltage regulators that would accept 2.5--6V (or a smaller range inside these extremes) at <0.5A input and output a voltage & current that a TI balancing battery 4S 18650 charger would operate successfully with?

    Thanks again!

    Gary

  • Hi Gary,

The BQ25798 is the closest fit but it is host controlled (meaning it needs a processor to send I2C commands) and it only works down to about 3.5V input.

    Regards,

    Jeff
