LM3549: Buck/Boost current limits (What for?)

Part Number: LM3549

Reg 0x15

ILIMIT register sets the buck-boost converters current limit values.

The datasheet makes no mention of the use of these values?  i.e. Why would I limit the current to 2Amps when the part can only deliver 700mA max?

Please advise what is the purpose of the BuckBoost current limit.  Is this a performance issue or a safety issue?  i.e. Current limit of the Buck/Boost inductor?

Regards,

Kilroy
