BQ76952: How To Disable Charging While Discharging

Part Number: BQ76952

 Dear TI engineer,

How to turn off the charging MOS while discharging, because we found in the debugging process that once the discharge starts, the charging MOS cannot be turned off. I have an application that requires the charging MOS not to be turned on during discharging.

           Thanks

  • Hello Mark,

During charging or discharging, both FETs are ON. This is normal and how the BMS works.

If the charging FET was off, the only way to discharge would be through the body-diode of the charge FET. Which is not ideal as the this current can damage the FET if high enough for a long enough time. However, the BQ76952 has a body-diode protection to protect the FET from damage due to current by turning the FET on to protect it.

This is configured in Settings:Protection:Body Diode Threshold. I would not recommend leaving the CHG FET off during discharging.

    Best Regards,

    Luis Hernandez Salomon

  • Dear Luis ,

When I use MCU to control DFEOFF and CFEOFF respectively, I can realize that the charging MOS does not turn on when discharging. I will use it carefully to avoid burning out the charging MOS.

            Thanks,
