[CITECH] Request a Recommendation for a Suitable Charger IC

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25798, BQ25672, BQ25713, TPS25221

Hi, TI Support Team

Please recommend a product that can be supported by customer inquiries.

- Application: Network Audio Player

I want to use DC15V power by using 5 in series with 3V-50F(1840) product.

DATA SHEET_EDLC_VINA_WEC_305506_QG.PDF

When the initial AC power is applied, a large amount of current flows instantaneously, which may cause a problem in driving the set.

At least Min1A ~ Max 2A would be enough, but I would like you to recommend a suitable charger for this.

If you have any further questions, please reply.

Thanks.

Regards,

MJ

  • Hi MJ,

For 15V input and  5x3V=15V output, the player needs a buck-boost converter or 100% duty cycle buck based charger. From the charger portfolio, all of our NVDC buck-boost chargers limit output current to trickle charge = 100mA until V(BAT) = 2.5V, except for the BQ25713 charge controller with external FETs.  That charger is a bit of overkill for your application.  You could use the BQ25798 buck-boost or BQ25672 buck with integrated FETs chargers but they will need a current limited FET like TPS25221 to provide a second current path from SYS to BAT until V(BAT)>2.5V.

Since you will not also be using a LiIon battery in this application, you actually don't need a battery charger and could use a buck-boost dc/dc converter or 100% duty cycle buck converter that has adjustable current limit. I am not familiar enough with those portfolios to make a recommendation.  If this option is of interest, I suggest creating a new e2e post.

    Regards,
    Jeff
