TPS65987D: Supplying VCONN as UFP

Part Number: TPS65987D

Hi team,

Would the TPS65987D acting as a UFP need to supply VCONN through PP_CABLE if the power bank it is connected to can already supply VCONN at the other end of the cable?

Thanks,

Ben

  • Hi Ben,

If a PD controller needs to communicate with the cable, it also needs to provide VCONN.

The Data DFP will always supply VCONN to the cable during normal operation.

If there is a situation where a Power Role swap occurred, and the Data UFP is also the Power Source, the UFP will need to supply VCONN to communicate with the cable to obtain cable electrical ratings information(max current/voltage supported)

Would the TPS65987D acting as a UFP need to supply VCONN through PP_CABLE if the power bank it is connected to can already supply VCONN at the other end of the cable?

No, It appears that the other end is a DFP and Power Source, so the UFP will not need to supply VCONN.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Chris

  • Hi Ben,

I originally provided an partially incorrect answer and updated the first reply with the correct answer. Sorry for the confusion.
