TPS55288: Questions on PMP40801 schematic

Part Number: TPS55288
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PMP40801

Hi,

I am referring to PMP40801 (PMP40801 reference design | TI.com) schematic for the design of a USB-PD charger, since I am using the same combination of devices. I have the following queries:

  1. Is the MX25l8006EM1I-12G a mandatory requirement for the application. I understand that the device utilizes serial peripheral interface for communication and can be utilized to store firmware, configuration settings, boot code or other information. Are there any alternate methods that can be used?
  2. Why is the J1 connector used?
