BQ25170: Does it affect to battery charging if external LEDs are used?

Part Number: BQ25170

Hello TI experts,

My customer considers BQ25170 for their new product.

As you know, BQ25170 does not have power path. (VIN directly to the load)

and my customer wants to use 5 LEDs and MCU to indicate charging status. (these leds are not only indicate charging status but also use in normal operation.)

anyway to blink these leds, current consumption would be about 40mA or 50mA. these current will spend in connected battery.

In this case, does it affect to "complete" battery charging if current consumption through battery (LED blink) is exist?

if yes, please recommend other battery charger which have power path and connect the load which is separated from battery.

my customer wants standalone(RC settable) and cheapest battery charger.

Best regards,

Chase

  • Hi Chase

Yes current to the LEDs will show as battery current and change termination current.

The BQ25170 is looking for current to fall below 10% of fast charge current for 30ms before setting charge complete.  The LED current will keep this current higher requiring current into battery to fall lower that desired.

But if the LED has an off timer of greater than 30ms at some rate the BQ25170 can detect only current into battery and terminate at the 10% point.
