TPS1641: How to handle the ILIM pin when using the latchoff feature

Guru 12205 points
Part Number: TPS1641

Hi,

The TPS16413 has overcurrent protection features on the ILIM pin (hiccup) and IOCP pin (latch off). We plan to configure a circuit that simply latches off when an overcurrent flows, without using hiccup protection.

The data sheet states that the ILIM pin should not be left open or connected to ground, so I am trying to open it by removing the capacitor from the IDLY pin of ILIM. Is there any problem with this pin handling method? I would like to know the pin settings when configuring a circuit that latches off when an overcurrent flows without using hiccup protection.

Thanks,

Conor

  • Hi Conor,

ILIM and IOCP are not independent. TPS16413 will current limit after timer is over and then hit thermal shutdown and latch off.

You want part to circuit break when overcurrent is detected and not enter into current limit?

I am on leave till year end. Further responses will be delayed.

  • Hi Kunal,

You want part to circuit break when overcurrent is detected and not enter into current limit?

No. We are considering limiting overcurrent using TPS16413.

Please tell me the circuit configuration for TPS16413 that does not use hiccup protection after overcurrent limiting, but only latches off when overcurrent flows.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Conor,

What do you mean by hiccup protection? You mean device trying to restart?  TPS16413 is latch off variant. So it will limit current when overcurrent is there and then after hitting thermal shutdown it will stay latched.

  • Hi Kunal,

it will limit current when overcurrent is there and then after hitting thermal shutdown it will stay latched.

Is there no problem with the circuit configuration in the data sheet above for the circuit that latches off when overcurrent flows?
The data sheet states, "Do not open the ILIM pin or connect it to ground," so I was thinking of removing the capacitor from the IDLY pin of ILIM and leaving it open.

  • Hi Conor,

Below configuration is fine. IDLY and ILIM are separate pin. Keeping IDLY open will cause device to enter into current limit without any delay.

  • Hi Kunal,

    Thank you for your reply.
I want to stop repeating Iout>Ilim, Iout<Ilim until thermal shutdown occurs, as shown in the left waveform in the attached document.

    TPS16413.xlsx

TPS16413 is set as below, is there any problem?
With this setting, it is working to latch off when Iout≧1.4A.
    ・Iocp=1.37A(12kΩ)
    ・Ilim=1.45A(6.8kΩ)
    ・Tdly=155ms (not implemented)

    Thanks,

    Conor

  • Hi Conor,

    This looks to be fine.
