TPS62933: Can this buck driver be used as USB PD VBUS Source?

Part Number: TPS62933

Hi, I need a buck converter, to create a USB-C PD voltage source in range 5V to 20V, 3A of current(2,5A for 20V). I create a chematic with a TPS62933 shown bellow, but I am not sure if this driver will work fine in that conditions.

The additional PD Driver set an output voltage by connecting a PDOx nets to gnd. I chose TPS62933 becouse it is quite cheap, small package and has maximum PWM of 98%, which can help to achive 20V from 24V input. But I am worry becouse of WEBENCH can't create a simulation with this driver when I set an output voltage to 20V, showing an error that phase margin is out of range, but maximum output voltage should be 22V. Another case I am worry is UVP and/or OVP when PD driver change an output voltage. Does TPS driver stop working and restart? If yes, I have to find other chip.

Mayby someone have an experience with this chip, and can answer my questions.

  • Hello Marcin,

    Thanks for evaluating TPS62933!

Sorry for my late reply, we were on Chinese New Year.

    Please see my comments below.

    1. Surely our device could support up to 22Vout_max, but thermal may be a problem if output power is high.

See this e2e post, previously I measured tps62933 EVM board (2 layers) thermal, 24Vin-19Vout-3A-500kHz, device was about 140C which was too high.

Is your PCB board size big? How many layers? Is your board thermal dissipation good or bad?

    2. If thermal won't be a problem, I need to review your external components design, I can help to do some simulations of four Vout (5/9/15/20Vout) loop stability.

    3. If thermal could be a problem, I strongly suggest you to evaluate TPS56837H, this part is designed for TypeC PD application.
