TPS54824: TPS54824

Part Number: TPS54824

Hi

Today I got a strange problem with the power regulator . I am using TPS54824, five numbers on board , out of which , 3 are meant to power AFE 7950 .

When I switched on the circuit, the current seemed fine . But after 5 to 6 minutes , all TPS on the board ie 5 numbers failed meaning , so fixed voltage on Vfb pin .

But I am not finding any short on output or input

  • Hi Vikas,

Can you share the design specs for Vin, Vout, Iout, Fsw that you plan to use for the TPS54824 designs you shared? I saw three TPS54824 schematics in your attached pdf. I can then review the design.

    • Did you have any waveforms for VIN, SW, VOUT for these TPS54824 designs that you can share?
    • When you say failed, does that mean no output? If you power up the board again, do the designs power back up?
    • Are only the AFE TPS54824 designs not working or the other two as well?
    • Provide some additional details on testing that you are performing which may also provide insight into the issue.

    Thanks,
    Amod

  • Hi Amod

I got two such boards assembled. In one board , I have tested them with external fans and till now , I am able to proceed testing .

other board , I switched on for some 5 min , then I observed this . When I say failed , it means no output , even the impedance is not showing short .Even after powering on after sometime, I could not find output .

All five have failed . As the device failed , I don’t have the plots . I have given it for assembly of new ICs . Can it be because of temperature.

  • Hi Vikas,

It is hard to say if its thermally related or not. The device has TSD feature which will trigger a shutdown if the temp exceeds 170C. And in such cases, powering up again should allow for the device to be back up again. Can you confirm if nothing else on the board powering up the input rail or any components are heating up or damaged? If you swap out the failed devices with new ones, does the board power back up?

    Thanks,

    Amod

  • Amod

I tried powering up after some time, still no positive response. As it happened for all the 5 devices, I am not doubting the descrete components.

I have replaced 3 out of 5 devices. I will power on and share the plots of frequency.

  • Amod

I replaced three of them . And they are working fine . Even the switching frequency seems okay .

Can there be another reason , that all five can go bad .

If you see the SD , I have used E Fuse before these .

  • Not sure based on the information shared so far. I would recommend checking thermals, voltages and currents in steady state operation of all these devices as well as stability via load transient. And try to debug the issue from there. Let me know if you have any waveforms to share and we can review those.

    Thanks,
