BQ79616EVM-021: Serial port working on FTDI connection.

Part Number: BQ79616EVM-021
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ79616-Q1, BQ79616, USB2ANY

I have a BQ79616EVM and I can talk to it with the BQAutoEval application and monitor cell voltages.  I am now trying to talk to it over the FTDI connection but can not seem to get any responses from the board.  I have verified that I am sending the wakeup signal using a logic analyzer as well as the Auto Addressing sequence as shown in the BQ79616-Q1 Software Design Reference appnote. I do not see anything being sent back after the last Dummy Read step in the Auto Addressing sequence, but not sure I should.  After that sequence I try to do a single device read of register 0x500 (Part ID), but also do not see a response come back.

J2, J18 and J21 are populated, J1 is not.  I'm using 1Mbps as the baud rate.  The FTDI Cable is a 5V cable.   Is there a connection or jumper setting I am missing?

  • Tom,

To use the FTDI port on the BQ79616 you must depopulate J18 and J21. Although you can technically use the port to communicate with the device, it goes to the same pins on the chip as the USB2ANY port. Using the USB2ANY port is better documented and supported.
