We have purchased the EV2400 and BQ40Z50EVM kit for doing the fuel gauge calibration. We have check the user guide of BQ40Z50 and we can not be able to understand the connections.

Below is the material i am having:

1. EV2400

2. BQ40Z50EVM

3. 3 cell battery pack with typical output voltage of 11.1V

Please let us know the connections we need to make to connections for fuel gauge calibration.

Hey Udesh,

Do you have access to measure each individual cell voltage in the pack, or are you only able to measure the total pack voltage?

I dont have the access to measure the each cell voltage.

I can only measure the voltage of complete battery pack.

Hey Udesh,

Thank you for that information. The BQ40z50 EVM will not be a good fit for you since you can not measure each individual cell voltage. I would recommend using the BQ34Z100 EVM as this is a top of stack gauge that does not depend on measuring each individual cell voltage.

We have asked for the fuel gauge calibration for the 3 cell battery and we are using the fuel gauge BQ40Z50 and BQ4050z. So as per TI we can do the fuel gauge calibration using the kit BQ40Z50 for both these parts.

So can you please check and confirm which EVK we need to use for the BQ40Z50 and BQ4050Z calibration.

No, you will need the BQ34z100 EVM if you don't have access to each individual cell.

We are using two fuel gauges:

1. BQ40Z50

2. BQ4050

Kindly let us know if we can calibrate both the fuel gauges with the BQ34z100 EVM

Also as mentioned in the user guide of BQ34z100 EVM, this evm is used for the calibration of bq34z100 fuel gauge but we are using the another fuel gauge. Kindly confirm if this is also used for BQ40Z50 and BQ4050 calibration.

No you can not calibrate those fuel gauges with the BQ34z100 EVM.

we are already having these evm, but we are not able to understand how to do the connections. Can you please help here ?

we are using the complete battery pack and we can only access the total voltage of battery pack.

Hey Udesh,

As I explained before, you will need to have access to each individual battery cells terminal to use either the BQ4050 EVK or BQ40z50 EVK. If you only have access to the total voltage of the battery pack then you will need to use the BQ34z100 EVK.

We are using a BQ40Z50 fuel gauge IC. We only have the access to measure the total voltage of the 3 cell battery pack.

So kindly let us know which EVM we need to buy for fuel gauge calibration.

Hello Udesh,

Since you only have access to the total voltage of the three cells, you cannot use the BQ40Z50EVM or the BQ4050EVM. Both of these gauges require you to have access to the individual cell voltages, so you would need to be able to access each of the three cells in the pack. Your option here for your pack is to use the BQ34Z100EVM.
