Hi TI Experts,
The battery charger BQ25616/BQ25616J somehow detects the attached battery and we need unterstand how this is done. This helps us to understand the following issue.
If the battery is deep discharged mode the battery is sometimes not detected and it is not possible to recovery the battery. In deep discharged mode the integrated serial FET inside battery is open to protect the battery cell. To recover the battery and to close the integrated serial FET a charging cycle should start. In the battery the TI fuel gauge BQ78Z100 is assembled with the cell configuration 1S2P. The TS Pin of the BQ25616 is connected to GND with 10k and to REGN with 10k, as recommended in the datasheet.
Here are my questions to this topic:
1) What is the condition or threshold to detect a battery? Is the current measured and is there a threshold?
2) How can we force the BQ25616 to detect the battery even no battery is connected? This could help us to understand the issue better.
Best Regards,
Patrick
Hi Patrick,
1) For battery only mode, the battery is detected by forcing a voltage on the BAT pin above VBAT_UVLOZ. The BATFET will turn on at VBAT_DPLZ.
2) The charger will charge the BAT capacitor to the regulation voltage. The main question is what closes the protector of the battery used? In other words, what is the condition to make connection again?

Mike Emanuel
