TPS40400: Solution recommendation for power supply with remote sensing

Hey Power Management team,

I have a customer working on a new project and we have a design challenge that we're hoping you can help provide guidance on.

We need to be able to output 5V, supply that voltage to a component that is a few feet away, and sense that voltage remotely over differential lines. The solution today uses discrete components and they are hoping for an integrated solution with the same functionality. Input voltage is 24V and current is under 1A.

Do you have any guidance on TI devices or reference designs that would be best or this use-case?

You listed the TPS40400 controller as the part number. Does this solution need PMBus, or just differential remote sense?

Hi Peter,

The E2E system prefers that we input a part number and I noticed that the App Note had TPS40400 as one of the example solutions for remote sensing.

I am not sure if the customer needs PMBus but I will have the customer comment back on here directly with additional insight on whether support for PMBus is needed.

Depending on whether it is needed or not, do you have any advice on what the latest recommended devices to consider would be for this use-case?

The E2E system wants a device part number so that it can direct the question to the correct group within TI, tagging the wrong part number, like a 20V PMBus controller when looking for a 24V integrated converter solution will only slow down the response by directing the question to the wrong team.

What is the maximum voltage needed on the 24V input so I can make sure we get this pointed to the correct group?

Hey Peter,

Sorry for the delayed reply as I just returned from vacation. The customer confirmed that there is no need for PMBus; they only require remote sensing. I'll check with the customer on what the max voltage is on the 24V input and will report back.

Are you able to share what the application is?

It doesn't happen to be a remote signaling lamp for a rail-road application?

Unfortunately the combination of 24V in and integrated differential remote sense is pretty limited. The only device we found that supports both is the TPS40130, but it's a 2-phase controller which is massive overkill for a 1-A application. They're likely better with a 24V input 1-3A output converter with an external remote sense amplifier. Just make sure that the part has the head-room over the 5V output to support any drop across the power and return lines.

Also, I would recommend capacitively coupling a local sense into the remote-sense lines to counter any inductance in the power path in order to ensure stability.
