TUSB1046EVM: DP alt-mode and TPS65987 PD

Part Number: TUSB1046EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65DSI86, TPS65987, TPS65987D

Tool/software:

I am using the TUSB1046EVM rev F.  The schematic file for the EVM does not match the board.  I found the correct schematic file in the E2E forum, but it would be nice to have this fixed in the link below.

I've been following the steps in in the links below and got video to my monitor, but I had to do an extra step before using the 7607.TUSB1046EVM Rev I Firmware.bin

1) depopulated R13 and populated R11

2) added a zero ohm to R36 so R36/R37 are shorted together

I saw HPDIN go to "1" whenever the USBC monitor was plugged into P2 regardless whether anything was plugged into P3.  I woud have thought HPDIN should have went high whenever the DP cable from the PC to the TUSB1046EVM was plugged into P3 regardless whether anything was plugged into P2?

I used a jumper on J1 to pull CTL1 high which I expected to do, but the extra step I had to take was using a jumper on J2 to pull CTL0 low to get video working.  Not sure why this wasn't required in the other posts to get video working?  Once I updated the flash with 7607.TUSB1046EVM Rev I Firmware.bin everything worked without the jumpers on CTL1 and CTL0.

In Table 7-7 of the datasheet, are there only 16 equalization settings when in GPIO mode?  The table makes it look like if EQ1=R and EQ0=1 then SSEQ1 and DPEQ1 also have to be "R" and SSEQ0 and DPEQ0 also have to be "0" when in GPIO mode, which is equalization setting 7.  But I would think you should be able to have different settings between EQ, SSEQ, and DPEQ.

Can the TUSB1046 accept eDP from the SN65DSI86?

We'd like to add power delivery with PPS to the TUSB1046 circuit since the TPS65987 is already used, but it is not clear whether the TPS65987 can support PPS or not?

  • Hi Joe,

The new (Rev I) firmware fixed an issue with the PD controller firmware driving CTL1 to enable video. Its good to hear that the EVM works with this firmware file.

I woud have thought HPDIN should have went high whenever the DP cable from the PC to the TUSB1046EVM was plugged into P3 regardless whether anything was plugged into P2?

HPDIN comes from the sink in a DisplayPort Connection, not the source. Since the USB-C receptacle connects to the DP sink, this is where HPD is negotiated (through the PD controller)

In Table 7-7 of the datasheet, are there only 16 equalization settings when in GPIO mode?

Each EQ setting is independent of the other two. EQ, SSEQ, and DPEQ do not rely on each other and each individually have 16 EQ settings.

Can the TUSB1046 accept eDP from the SN65DSI86?

Let me check internally on this and follow up tomorrow.

Our team only supports the TUSB1046 and similar USB re-drivers, not PD controllers. I think this would be a better question for the PD controller team. You can submit another E2E with TPS65987D as the part number and it will be referred to that team.

  • Hi Joe,

I checked on your eDP question and yes the TUSB1046 can accept eDP from the SN65DSI86. You should disable ASSR if you want to route the signals in this way.

    Best,

    Shane

  • Hi Shane,

To be clear, I need to change SN65DSI86 reg 0x5A from 0x01 ASSR (default) to 0x00 standard DP scrambler seed to be used with the TUSB1046?

    Thanks,
    Joe

  • Hi Joe,

The method to disable ASSR can be found in the bottom paragraph of this E2E FAQ:

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Best,
