BQ76952: DSG FET is not activated

Hello,
I'm using BQ76952EVM with 3 LFP cells.
When i'm using DFETOFF pin or ALLFETSON command to start the discharge without the load attached all works fine - i see correct pack voltage
and when i connect 50 Ohm load i 0.2 A current.
However if i do the same with the load attached, i see PDSG Fet is opened and stay open and DSG Fet stay closed.

    Hello Vadim,

    Thank you for sharing your .gg file.

    I see that you do have PREDISCHARGE Mode enabled, which allows the device to first enable the PDSG FET before transitioning to turn on the DSG FET and turn off the PDSG FET.

    If you did not want this enabled, you can go to Settings:FET:FET Options[PDSG_EN] to disable this feature.

    If you did want PREDISCHARGE Mode enabled, but you’re not sure why it’s not transitioning to the DSG FET, do you mind sharing waveforms of your LD and Stack voltage?

    I see that Settings:FET:Predischarge Timeout is set to 0 which means that the device will use the voltage delta chosen in Settings:FET:Predischarge Stop Delta to determine when to exit PREDISCHARGE mode. The specifics of this is explained in Section 13.3.6.6 Settings:FET:Predischarge Stop Delta in the Technical Reference Manual.

    I disable PREDISCHARGE as you suggested  in it resolved my problem.

    I have however follow up question in this context:
    Our final design will be similar to TIDA-010247, with parallel FET setup.
    The TRM says the PREDISCHARGE FETs are not useful in case of parallel FETs,  however 
    They are present in TIDA.

    Can you explain?

    Hi Alexis,
    You're right the TRM does not mention it explicitely,  however:

    • Body Diode Protection is Disabled in Parallel Mode: When using a parallel FET configuration (Settings:FET:FET Options [SFET] = 0), the body diode protection is disabled.
    • PREDISCHARGE and Body Diode Protection: PREDISCHARGE mode is primarily associated with mitigating the effects of current flowing through the body diode of the main discharge FET during turn-on. If this current is high for a sustained period, it can damage the FET.
    • Parallel FETs Have Separate Paths: In a parallel FET configuration, the charge and discharge paths are separate. Therefore, the body diode protection feature, and consequently, the need for PREDISCHARGE mode, becomes irrelevant.

    Therefore, since body diode protection is disabled in parallel FET mode and PREDISCHARGE mode is designed to protect the body diode, you do not need to use PREDISCHARGE mode in this configuration.

    I would not say that PREDISCHARGE mode is not needed when using parallel paths.

    PREDISCHARGE mode’s function is mainly to reduce inrush current when the load is initially powered. This can help prevent the AFE from perceiving and prematurely triggering a SCD fault. The pre-discharge path also helps avoid capacitive current spikes when the load is attached.

    This Parallel Paths with the BQ769x2 Battery Monitor Family application note may also be useful to refer too.

    As for a stop delta value, this would depend on what you would prefer for your system.

    Hi Alexis,

    My setup is BQ76952EVM  with 3 LFP Cells, total battery voltage is: 9.83 V.  I use 100 Ohm resistance as load. 
    I've done Folloiwng 2 tests:
    1. I've activated PDSG Timeout (set to 1000 ms) with following results:
        When i pull down DFETOFF pin the LD Voltage goes from 0.04 V to 0.210 V for 1 s and then to 9.070 V
    2. I've set PDSG STOP DELTA to 255 (= 2.55V)
        When i pull down DFETOFF - LD Voltage goes fro 0.210 and stays there.
        It seems that PRE DISCHARGE do not arrive to ramp the LD voltage to (9.83 - 2.55) V.

    In any case i don't observe alert or fault bits.
    Any advice?

    1. For the first test, is the DSG FET ON and the PDSG FET OFF after 1 second? Was there an issue with the first test?

    2. When performing the second test, is the Predischarge Timeout still set to 1000 ms? When you deassert DFETOFF, are you using 0x0096 ALL_FETS_ON() to reenable the FETs as well?

    Can you also share the waveforms for both tests you completed with the DSG FET and PDSG FET included as well?

    The only issue is that i've exepected the LD Voltage gradually go from 0.04 V to 9.8 V but i did not observer it.
    At the moment when DFETOFF SWITCHEDto 0 the LD Voltage jumped to  0.210 V  and stayed there until the timeout

    In the second test the timeout was set to 0,  and i didn't use ALL_FETS_ON command. (I did not use it in the first test neither)

    Do you mind sharing your procedure and waveforms of the DSG FET, PDSG FET, and LD voltages of these tests? 

    Can you try to perform both tests and using the 0x0096 ALL_FETS_ON() command after deasserting DFETOFF as well?

    Can you also share your schematic?

    Hi Alexis,

    I'm using for my tests BQ76952EVM with 4 LFP Cells, connected as recommended in the users guide when VC3 is shorted to VC15. with and without 100 Ohm load
    I'm attaching a file describing the tests in detail and associated scope screenshots.
    One EXTREMELY strange observation:
    In the configuration without the load, when we try to hook scope probe to PDSG  signal he pack voltage goes immediatley to 12.53 V, even befor the beginnig of test.

    Hello Vadim,

    Thank you for sharing all of those results and information! If you did not change anything on the BQ76952 EVM near the PDSG FET, that would explain why you are seeing the LD voltage stop at ~0.32V.

    R40 (4.7kOhms) on the EVM schematic forms a voltage divider with the load resistance you have of 100 ohms. This stops the LD voltage at ~0.32V when you have the PFET enabled. You can have the LD voltage increase to something higher by changing that resistance to something smaller.

    As for why the PDSG STOP DELTA hasn’t allowed the DSG FET to be enabled is for a similar reason. With the PDSG STOP DELTA, the LD pin voltage needs to be greater than or equal to the top of stack voltage minus the delta chosen. Since the LD voltage could never go higher than ~0.32V, the device would not exit PREDISCHARGE mode.

    BTW When we maniupulate FETs by I2C  what command is preferable FET_ENABLE_ALL  or FET_CONTROL?

    Hello Vadim,

    Are the FETS already on? If there is no load, and the FETs are on, the PACK voltage should be close to the Top of Stack voltage.

    You should use FET_CONTROL versus FET_ENABLE. FET_ENABLE just controls the FET_EN bit which only enables or disables FET Test mode. Section 12.3 Command-Only Subcommands in the TRM mentions more about the FET_ENABLE command.

    Something to note, when using 0x0097 FET_CONTROL(), this subcommand should not be used if the DDSG or DCHG pins are being used in DDSG or DCHG mode.

    Hello Vadim,

    It doesn’t take a lot of current to bias the PDSG FET so a probe can pull-down the Vss and bias the PDSG ON, especially if it’s 1x probe. A 10x probe should be better.
