BQ25628E: Charging current configuration

Part Number: BQ25628E
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ27Z746

Tool/software:

Hi Team,

We are using the charger IC BQ25628E along with the fuel gauge BQ27Z746 in our design. We have fixed the charging current to 600mA by configuring BQ25628E.

During the charging with a 3.2V battery, we observed the following:
  • Initially, the charging current increased to 520mA.
  • However, after approximately 2 minutes, the current dropped to 220mA.
Could you please clarify why the charging current does not remain at the increased level? What could be causing this drop in current?
  • Hello,

There are multiple factors which could cause charge current to fall from the fast charge setting. Some examples include device reaching IINDPM or VINDPM regulation, thermal regulation, battery reaching constant voltage (CV) phase of charge. Another possibility is ICHG setting reducing due to watchdog timer expiration. Did you disable the watchdog timer during your test (REG0x16[1:0])?

If it is not due to watchdog timer expiration to further debug can you please share a register log of all BQ25628E registers (ideally in hexadecimal) after charge current has dropped? Additionally can you verify the voltage at BAT pin of BQ25628E when charge current is reduced?

    Best Regards,

    Garrett
