TPS25763Q1EVM: Can TPS25763EVM Support USB-C Host to USB Hub via J30 (UFP) and J29 (DFP)?

Part Number: TPS25763Q1EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25763-Q1, TS3USB221A-Q1

Tool/software:

I am planning to use the TPS25763-Q1 IC as shown in the diagram below.

In this setup, the laptop or tablet acts as the USB host, and through the TPS25763-Q1 and a MUX, both DP output and USB 3.1 or 3.2 should be routed to a USB hub, allowing connection to various USB devices.

According to the EVM, J29 is UFP only, but I would like to use J30 (USB Type-C) as a UFP to connect to the host, and J29 as a DFP to connect to the hub and access multiple devices.

Is there any way to configure the system to support this data path?

  • Bongeon,

The system is designed such that J29 is an upstream facing port, and J30 is nearly always a downstream facing port.  This IC is designed for automotive systems where J30 is the consumer facing USB port.  J29 is the internal connection to the automobile's SOC.  The reason we support dual role data is in the event an OEM wants to update the SOC firmware.  J30 is not meant to be UFP under normal operating conditions.  Therefore, this might not be the best part for your situation.

Do you require an automotive grade device?  If not, we have commercial grade products that may better suit your application.

    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

I selected the TPS25763-Q1 due to its operating temperature range.
Are there any other applications or use cases that are suitable for this temperature condition?

    Thanks,
    Bongeon

  • Bongeon,

This is our only device with DP alt mode and rated to 125C ambient.  Have you confirmed that USB2.0 datapath (meaning the cable at J29 is USB2.0 only) is not working to your expectations?

    Regards,
    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

Sorry for the late response. I didn’t have time to check due to another project.

I connected J29 and the USB hub using a USB 2.0 cable.
In this setup, the laptop was able to operate the hub, but the tablet could not.
When the hub worked with the tablet, DP output did not work, and when DP output was active, the hub did not work.

    Thanks,
    Bongeon

  • Hi Bongeon,

DP should be independent of USB2.0.  The USB D+/D- signals have a straight path through the EVM.

Just to double check - J18 is uninstalled.  Can you also try shorting the bottom pad of R41 to the top pad of C58?  This ensures the TS3USB221A-Q1 USB 2.0 data MUX is configured correctly.

I double checked everything should be fine on the firmware side assuming you are still on the out-of-box image.
