TPS23734: Wi-Fi 7 Mesh Router PoE PSE/PD solution recommendation

Part Number: TPS23734
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS23861, TPS23730, TPS23731

Tool/software:

Dear Madam/Sir,

I’m currently looking for a suitable PoE PD and PSE solution for a Wi-Fi 7 Mesh Router project with the following power and interface requirements:

 System Overview

  • Total Power Consumption: ~25W

  • Architecture:

    • 1 × 2.5GbE/10GbE WAN port

      • Requires PoE PD, compliant with IEEE 802.3bt Type 4 Class 8 or Type 3 Class 6

    • 2 × 2.5GbE LAN ports

      • Require PoE PSE, compliant with IEEE 802.3at Type 2 (20W each)

️ Additional Requirements

  • Flyback topology with isolation

  • Integrated or external DC-DC controller preferred

I would appreciate your recommendation for:

  1. PoE PD controller (suitable for high-power WAN port)

  2. PoE PSE controller(s) (suitable for dual LAN ports)

  3. Any reference designs or transformer specs that support this configuration

I appreciate your support, and I look forward to your guidance.

Best regards,

Hugo

  • Hi Hugo,

    Thanks for reaching out!

It looks like you need a PoE passthrough like below?

    If so.

    1. For class-6, you can use 1xTPS23730 (flyback controller integrated) as 1xPD input port, and 1xTPS23861 as 2xPSE output ports.

    2. For class-8, it could be 1xTPS2372-4 as1xPD input port, 1xTPS23731 as flyback controller, and 1xTPS23861 as 2xPSE output ports.

Please find attached preliminary reference design for #1. You can upgrade Class-4 to Class-6 using TPS23730 to replace TPS23731, and using the 2nd channel of TPS23861 for another PSE port. TPS23731 + 12V Flyback + TPS23861 Passthrough_Sch (V3).PDF

    Best regards,

    Diang

  • Hi, Diang,

Thanks for your explanation and recommendation. I'd adopt #2 design.

Attached is the prototype version (tps2373-4, tps23861) we did before. (This is for the Wi-Fi 7 Router application.)

Q1: Can you help with the power management architecture?

    Wi-Fi 7 Router

    • USB-C port (12V/2.5A or 12V/3A)
    • One 10GbE WAN port (PoE PD side)
    • Two 2.5GbE LAN ports (PoE PSE side)

Dual Power Supplies: USB-C Port, PoE PD Port

    • USB-C PD Controller (12V/2.5A)
    • WAN Port, PoE PD Controller (IEEE 802.3bt Type 4 Class 8, 71.3W min.)
    • If a USB-C PD power source plug-in is used, disable the PoE power source

Downstream Port Power Supplies: two LAN ports

    • 2*LAN ports, PoE PSE Controller (IEEE 802.3at Type 2 Class 4, 30W max.)

Q2: Can you recommend the RJ45 connector, Power LAN Transformer?

    • 10GbE port, Power LAN Transformer, and RJ45 connector
    • 2.5GbE por,t Power LAN Transformer, and RJ45 connector

    Thank you Slight smile

    Cheers,

    Hugo

  • Hi Hugo,

Thanks for your reply. I will get back to you in 2-4 business days. Thanks for the patience.

  • A few questions for you

Q1: How to select a suitable Power Transformer?

    Q2: How about the switching frequency of TPS23730, TPS2373-4, TPS23861, TPS2372-4?

As far as I know, transformer core loss is directly proportional to the switching frequency, assuming constant magnetic flux and core material. This core loss contributes to heat generation, which, in turn, affects the overall thermal performance and heat dissipation requirements of the transformer.

P.S.:   frequency (kHz or MHz), B: peak magnetic flux density (T), x≈1.32.0 depending on material, y≈2.0

Q3: I need to check any questionnaires or provide the specifications. of PoE PS/PSE to Transformer vendors?

    • Switching frequency (100KHz, 300KHz, 530KHz,....)
    • Topology (flyback, forward?)
    • Working mode
      • If it’s a Flyback topology, what’s the working mode? CCM, DCM, or BCM?
    • Input voltage
    • Need Auxiliary winding or not
      • If yes, what’s Aux. winding’s voltage and current
    • Saturation current
    • How many output
      • Each output voltage and current
    • Safety requirement
      • IEC 60950-1/ IEC 62368-1/ UL 1310 etc.)
    • Insulation level (Functional/ Basic/ Reinforced)
    • Need Hi-Pot (Dielectric)
      • If yes, Hi-Pot voltage standard and time: (1500Vac 1 minute or 1875Vac 1 second?)

  • Hi Hugo,

Sorry that I do not know much insights about structure other than PoE...

I will share you a preliminary reference of "1xTPS2372-4 as1xPD input port, 1xTPS23731 as flyback controller, and 1xTPS23861 as 2xPSE output ports" But only PoE parts.

    TPS2372-4+TPS23731+TPS23861 2 PSE Ports.PDF

For the transformer, TI PoE PD chip switching frequency can be adjusted, but normally 100 - 500kHz, and 250kHz is most common and most of transformers are in this range. Details of transformer loss may be better to get the inputs from transformer vendors.

    12V Class4 250kHz PSR flyback transformer could be LDT1069-50R, 750320320, EP13A-1021.

Hope above information can help. Let me know if you have other questions or concerns.

    Best regards,

    Diang
