UCD3138A: Full bridge Secondary Side Rectification

Part Number: UCD3138A

Tool/software:

Hello,

I was looking at using the UCD3138A for a Dual Active Bridge topology or a half bridge LLC with full bridge rectification on the output (haven't decided on which one yet). My question was whether the UCD3138A supports these topologies? It seems like all the available reference designs focus on topologies with a centre tapped transformer on the secondary side. So I was checking that there wasn't some fundamental hardware limitation that prevents these topologies?

Thanks

Aaron

  • Hello Aaron,

I will provide a response tomorrow.

  • Hello Aaron,

There is no fundamental hardware limitation by the UCD3138x to control these topologies.

The PMP23340UCD is a FB-LLC instead of a HB-LLC. However, it does showcase a full-bridge rectification on the secondary side. So, it is possible to do a HB-LLC with full-bridge rectification using the UCD3138x.

While it is theoretically possible to use the UCD3138x in a Dual Active Bridge (DAB) topology, we currently do not have any examples. All TI examples use the C2x MCU instead. We may have new examples in the future due to increasing interest.

  • Thanks very much for getting back to me!

I don't think the PMP23340 does have FB rectification. This still uses a split winding transformer. However, I see how it can be easily extendable to FB.

On a slightly different topic I've done some further investigation into the UCD3138A, looking to the code composer studio support and example code. It doesn't seem that it's well supported in the latest version of CCS (20.2 at the time of writing). There are no example projects that can be directly imported and it's tough to get the code to compile correctly.  Is that a sign that the support for this product is ending? Like would the development direction be more towards C2000s for all digital power control?

    Thanks again!

  • Hello Aaron,

I see, are you looking for a secondary rectification more like the schematic below? The UCD3138A should also be able to control this topology.

The UCD3138A firmware was developed during the older CCS versions and was not developed for the newer Theia-based CCS. I personally use CCS v12 and I recommend customers to stick with the older CCS versions (CCS v6 - v12). However, we have heard feedback from customers that use the Theia-based CCS v20+ with the UCD3138A and do not have any issues. Where have you heard that the porting of firmware to the CCS v20+ is difficult?

TI is reinvesting in the UCD3138x products and will have a new, exciting product dedicated for the CCS v20+ coming soon (2026 timeframe). Please contact your local Field Applications Engineer (FAE) for our latest product roadmap and timeline.

  • Yes exactly that topology.

For the porting of the firmware. I tried it and it wasn't the smoothest of journeys. However, I did manage to get it to compile in the end. Mainly it was the BIDIR firmware example that was the issue. The HBLLC example was much smoother. Installed the 5.2.9 compiler into CCS 20, excluded some duplicate linker files from the build and it compiled just fine.

Exciting news about new products in this space! I'll reach out and see what info I can get.

    Thanks for all your help!

  • Hello Aaron,

Thanks for the feedback about the BIDIR. I have heard customers port other topologies to CCSv20+ like HSFB and PSFB successfully, which is why I wanted to ask. I will close the thread.
