LM70840: Question regarding LM70840 and LM70880

Part Number: LM70840
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM70880, LM5146

Tool/software:

Hi Team,

my customer are evaluating LM70840 and LM70880, from the simulation result for LM70840, the recommended inductance is 15uH and R_sense is 9mOhm. But same operating condition, the simulation for LM70880 is reommended 10uH and R_sense is 5mOhm. The operating conditions are Vin=30V-80V, Vout=12V, Iout=2.4A.

The questions are:

1. Why there are differences on passive elements selection?

2. If we replace LM70880 to LM70840, should we change the external circuit accordingly or we can shoose 15uH for LM50880?

A new operating conditions: Vin=30V-80V, Vout=8.5V with Iout=15A, do you recommend using 2*LM70880 parallel output for this application, or we should use LM5146+external MOSFET to realize it?

Thanks.

BRs.

Frank

  • Hello Frank

1 LM70840 device is validated with only 9mΩ sense resistor. LM70880 device is validated with only 5mΩ sense resistor.

    2. Yes, you have to change the sense resistor, and then change the external components accordingly

    3. Please consider LM5146/48 if the maximum ambient temperature is high (higher than ~ 80°C) ,
