BQ41Z90: External balancing

Part Number: BQ41Z90
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50

Hello! From this topic: https://e2e.ti.com/support/power-management-group/power-management/f/power-management-forum/1558194/bq41z90-expansion-of-balancing-capacity/5997974?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=BQ41z90%20external%20balancing  I assume that the extenal balance circuit for BQ41z90 is the same as the BQ769x2, is that correct?

Will the external balancing affect the dinamic impedance tracker algorithm? in other words, adding an external balance could impact in the SOC calculation accuracy?

Thanks in advance

Diego

  • Hello,

This question has been assigned within the team and will be reviewed and followed up with another application engineer when possible. In the meantime please attach any associated .log/.gg files associated with the projects

    Thank you,

  • Hello Diego,

I assume that the extenal balance circuit for BQ41z90 is the same as the BQ769x2, is that correct?

Yes, the cell balancing circuit consist on internal bleeding resistor which tends to be around 150-200Ω. The IT FW already calculates for how long the cell balancing needs to be on to make sure the battereries are balanced.

Will the external balancing affect the dinamic impedance tracker algorithm?

No, if it is simple NFETs(vc2-vcx) & PFET(vc0-VC1)  design where the FETs turn on when the internal cell balancing turns on. I believe the TRM already has this data. Maybe in the BQ40z50 too.
