TPS2410 & TPS2411 Linear gate control / ON/OFF gate control different between of them

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2410, TPS2411

Hola,

I studying TPS2410/11's datasheet and still have a question about linear gate control & on/off gate control.

What's the different between linear gate control and on/off gate control?

Can someone help use a simple word to describe them? What's the purpose of them? Many thanks indeed ~

  • Jacky,

TPS2411 Hysteretic control here, is much like in SMPS.  It is solid On, solid Off control with a comparator control.  When solid on, the Gate will be fully enhanced with 8-12v.

TPS2410 is a regulated 10mv Va-c when I * Rdson would normally be <10mv.  Vgs is lower, not much higher than Vth of the FET as the FET is driven in the linear region.

Hysteretic (2411) mode is good for high di/dt load transients since Linear mode (2410) has a high source impedance due to a close loop regulation.  Vout is less affected when the FET is fully enhanced as in Hysteretic.  But Hysteretic mode can have light load oscillations and this is where Linear mode (2410) has advantage.  See DS pg 13, "TPS2410 vs TPS2411...." section for an explanation.
