TPS61088 component selection

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PMP9773, TPS61088

Hello All,

I am making a USB power bank that will work with my Droid Turbo 2. I would like to have my power bank copy the specifications from the wall wart that came with my phone.

The wall wart specifications are;

5V, 2.85A

9V, 2.85A

12V, 2.15A

I was looking at copying the "USB Power Supply using TPS61088 to Support Quick Charge 2.0" reference design (PMP9773), and changing some values to match the wall wart. But I am having trouble figuring out the best options and values to get what I want.

Could someone help me figure out what value components would be my best option? I am not worried about small form factor since the case I am using holds 5 - 18650 batteries.

Thanks for any help

Anthony

  • You can use PMP9773 idea. But you need to enlarge the PCB size to handle the thermal. And you need to use a higher current rating inductor. For the inductor and output capacitor selection, you can refer to the TPS61088 EVM user guide.

  • Thank you Helen,

I was planing to have the board made with 2oz copper to help with the heat. And the DC/DC converter would be the only thing on board (68mm x 32mm max board size). The protection, charging, etc.. would be on another board. Do you think this would be a good idea?

For the inductor do you think the 1.2µH value would be OK, or would there be a better value? I was planing on using the highest current ratting inductor I could find that will fit into the box I am using (I have a max height of 12mm). I know a lower DRC is better, but what would be to low?

    Thank you
    Anthony
  • The thermal will be OK if the layout is good. And if possible, please use 4-layer board in your design.

you can use 1.2uH-2.2uH inductor in your design. Coilcraft has some inductor which can meet your requirement.  The DCR is better to <10m ohm to get high efficiency and good thermal performance.

  • Thank you again Helen,

    I will use your advice.

I was actually looking at the XAL7030 series inductor from Coilcraft, so you just confirmed what I was thinking of doing.

    Thank you

  • That's fine。 For the TPS61088's layout, you can refer to the datasheet or the EVM board.

    Good luck  !
