BQ24040: reliability or life issues running in thermal regulation

Part Number: BQ24040
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24090

Are there any long term or reliability issues if BQ24040 and BQ24090 parts are continually running in thermal regulation during fast charging of high capacity Li Ion batteries.

  • Hello Timothy,

While I cannot post any empirical data detailing the degradation of the bq24040 or bq24090 when the device is in thermal regulation what I can tell you is that.

The purpose of the Thermal Regulation feature on these devices is to protect the device form operating at length beyond the recommended operating conditions for these devices. When the device is in thermal regulation it is outside the the recommended conditions but with the absolute max. That said if you read TI;s published guidance on the impact of operating TI parts outside of the recommended operating range in Section 7 of the document linked below it is likely that the long term reliability of the part may be affected:

With that said I would strongly recommend against running either of these devices in Thermal Regulation on a frequent and extended basis.

I see that you have a related post that I have linked below that I am going to try and work through answering as well:
