BQ24160: Charger Charges beyond configured termination current

Part Number: BQ24160
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

Hi,
We are using BQ24160RGET, We are configuring this charger for charging voltage : 4.14V with charging current of 775mA. Termination current is programmed to 150mA. When adapter is connected it starts charging as per configuration.

But even after reaching to 150mA  it is still charging with charging current upto 130mA/ 80mA/ 60mA.

This has happened in three trails of test. With worst log, i.e. when it terminates at 60mA current, it took three hours time from 150mA to 60mA in our log.

Please tell me why is this variation happening? Is this expected behaviour of this IC?

Note: In EVM also it is behaving same way.

  • Hey Parthiban,

What is the input current limit being set to on the charger (both ILIM pin hardware setting and register setting)?

Do you have a load current on the charger as well (on VSYS)?

What is the power capability of your input source?

    Regards,

  • Hi Joel,

    Thanks for the reply.

What is the input current limit being set to on the charger (both ILIM pin hardware setting and register setting)?

IN input is set to 2.5A.

Do you have a load current on the charger as well (on VSYS)?

Yes, it is powering the system as well as charging.

What is the power capability of your input source?

It is capable of 20W max where as actual power consuming by our device is less than 6W.

  • Hi Joel,

Also to add here, we are using only the input (#Pin No: 21) for adaptor connection. The USB input (#Pin No: 22) is kept floating with 1uF bypass capacitor.

Since USB not used the USB ILimit is in default (100mA).

Hope this should not be a problem. Please confirm.

  • Hey Parthiban,

During the CC charging phase (when the BAT voltage is well below 4.14V), is the charger in DPM mode?

    What is your system load?

What is the voltage at the IN pin?

Do you see the same occurrence if you set the termination current to 200mA?

    Regards,

  • Hey Joel,

During the CC charging phase (when the BAT voltage is well below 4.14V), is the charger in DPM mode?

Since we have done it  in EVM, We don't know when it is falling to DPM mode. Attaching Bqstudio settings snap shot attched with this.

    What is your system load?

It is left unconnected in EVM.

What is the voltage at the IN pin?

5V appears at the pin input.

Do you see the same occurrence if you set the termination current to 200mA?

Still we did not test with this configuration. I will check and confirm.

Please look at the attached logs for more information.

  • Hey Parthiban,

The last thing I would ask of you when you perform your tests is to try enabling Register 01 Bit 0 - 'EN_NOBATOP'. Set it to 1 to disable the Reverse Boost Prevention circuit, which could cause what you are seeing in termination.

    Regards.
