BQ24190: CHRG_FAULT( input fault ) detail?

Part Number: BQ24190

Hello

My customer and I had tested bq24190 EVM in order to find detail criteria for REG09 CHRG_FAULT( input fault).

Please kindly refer attached ppt file.

Question1

In my EVM test, REG09 [5:4] became 00 in second read when VBUS < ≒3.5V .

Is it reasonable?

Question 2

In the data sheet page34 Table17, we found following description.

01 – Input fault (VBUS OVP or VBAT < VBUS < 3.8 V),

Please let us know more detail criteria as following. Is following correct isn’t it?

Also let me know 3.5V is correct or not

01 – Input fault (VBUS OVP or   VBAT> 3.55V and  3.5V?< VBUS < 3.8V)

With My Best Regards

  • Hi Kanji,

    Answer 1:

The value in this register should read 01 or "Input Fault" at any VBUS below 3.8 volts. The system uses 3.8 volts and 30 mA for poor source detection and if the value is below 3.8 volts then it should continue to read 01. The only condition under which this value would change with the VBUS still under 3.8 volts is described in my next answer.

    Answer 2:

In addition to my answer above, this device uses whichever input source has a higher voltage between the battery and the VBUS. Therefore, if the battery voltage is higher than the VBUS voltage, then this will be the input source. If your battery voltage passes the voltage of VBUS, then the input fault should clear to 00. Your assertion that if VBAT > 3.55 and 3.55 < VBUS < 3.8 generates an input fault is incorrect, as under a circumstance when VBAT is greater than VBUS the input fault would not be generated. The datasheet is correct in stating that this input fault is generated at VBAT < VBUS < 3.8 V.

Hope this assists in your evaluation of the part.
