TPS2660: Maximum allowable current

Part Number: TPS2660

Hi,

We got a question from the customer about TPS2660.
Could you help us?

[Question]
They would like to make sure about the maximum allowable current.

- According to the datasheet, we are thinking the recommended DC currrent range is up to 2.0A. Is out understanding correct?

- If the IC is set I(ol)=2.23A, the current can flow through the IC in the range of 2A to 2.11A. In this condition, there is possibility the exceeded 2.0A flows through the IC. If this current flow through the IC, are there any concerns for reliability of the IC?

- How much is the DC and pulse current rating? If the IC can allow any current as long as Tj is less than Tj rating, can the IC allows over 2.0A without decreased reliability?

<Customer's condition>
Vin=24V
Iout=1.8A(typ), 2.1A(max)

Best Regards,
tateo

  • Hi Tateo,

    TPS2660 can easliy handle 2A of DC current and there is no reliability issues with 2A DC current.

    For a current limit setting of 2.23A, Rilim = 5.36K, TPS2660's current limit accuracy varies 2.11 to 2.35 across temperature.

    And this is max current limit setting allowed by TPS2660.

    You can choose current limit setting lower or equal to 2.23A and it will not be an issue.

    Regards,

    Kari.

  • Hi, Thank you for your reply. I have a copule of things to make sure.

    - If the over 2.0A DC current such as 2.1A flows thorough the IC, is there any possibility the reliability of the IC decreases?
    - How much is the DC and pulse current rating? If the IC can allow any current as long as Tj is less than Tj rating, can the over 2.0A current flow through without decreased reliability?

    And we got additionl question from customer. Could you help us?

    - How much times can the IC operate the current limit without decreses reliability? If there are any data, could you provide us?

  • 0525.Thermal_Stress_in_TPS2660_eFuse.pdfHi,

    There is no reliability issues due to 2.1A flowing through the IC.

    DC current rating is 2.11A (considering temperature allowance) and pulsed current maximum is 3.8A for 4ms.

    However if the power dissipation is more, then Tj rises causing thermal shutdown to turn off the output.

    As long as Tj is less the max Tj rating, 2.0A can flow without decreased reliablity.

    Refer to the attached document on thermal stress in TPS2660.

    Regarding the additional question:

    TPS2660's current limit reliabiliy is certified as per UL

    UL 2367 Recognized

    – File No. 169910

    – RILIM ≥ 5.36 kΩ (2.35-A Maximum)

    UL60950 - Safe during Single Point Failure Test

    – Open/Short ILIM Detection

    Regards,

    Kari.
