bq40z50: Draining cells too fast

Hello,

I have a 4-cell in series design that uses the bq40z50.

We are noticing that within a week the cell voltages are down from a nominal 3.6V per cell to about 3V per cell.

I've provided a schematic for review.

    Also of note, with an ammeter connecting in line with B- to the cells, I'm seeing a current draw of -1.8mA with no SMBus connected. When connected to bqStudio, the draw is -2.21mA. I'm not sure yet if it's something in the gas gauge file. I don't see any components other that the bq40z50 that would be drawing the excessive amount of current from the cells.

  • Hi Kevin,
    Looking at the gg file and the schematic, I suspect the LEDs are getting turned on.
    Can you please change the Data Flash setting "Settings,Configuration,LED Configuration" from 0xD0 to 0x00 and see if the current drops in your measurement?
    Also, one other comment on the schematic, it will be better to connect the Reverse protection FET Q5 gate to PACK-, not the Device side ground, but this will not have any impact on your specific issue.

    Thank you for the suggestion. I made the change to the LED Configuration, but I'm still seeing the excessive current draw. If there isn't anything else that can be changed in the Data Flash, I'm wondering if there isn't a component causing the current draw. Although, I don't see what component that would be.

    Any additional suggestions are much appreciated.

    I don't think the current would go to zero with the "LED Configuration" change, but I wanted to check if the current reduced, since we are changing the LED current sink threshold.

    The main issue is that if the LEDs are not used, they should be left floating and not tied to VSS, otherwise you will have some current flow through the LED pins.

    Please let me know if changing "LED Config" changed the amount of current draw that you are seeing.

    Changing the LED Config to 00 didn't have any impact on the current draw. It remained the same.
    I had read in a previous post that the bq40z50 should have the LED and DISP pins tied to ground to improve ESD and EMI performance.

    It states in the datasheet the the LEDCNTL and DISP pins can be tied to Vss.

    Also, when I click the LED_TOGGLE Command the current draw increases to -14mA.
    So I don't think the LED's are being driven.

    The excess current is coming from something else.

    Even in sleep mode the draw is -1.8mA.

  • A leaky capacitor is a possibility. One symptom pointing to this would be if you heat or cool your PCB and the current changes significantly.

    I'm seeing the issue with the PCB simply hooked up to a set of cells and with no charge or discharge currents.
    In general, the board is just drawing too much current even in sleep mode.

    It's consistent among a few of the boards I've tested so I'm not sure about it being a leaky capacitor.

    I'm wondering if having the LEDCNTL pins pulled directly to Vss is causing the excessive current draw. The LED's aren't being used so rather than leave them floating, they were pulled low per the datasheet as ESD was a concern in the design.

    I would think the LED pins wouldn't be driven with the LED_EN bit off, but perhaps that isn't the case. I've recently read that if the pins aren't used and ESD or EMI is a concern, to pull them low with a 20kohm resistor in series to Vss.

    Does anyone think pulling them directly to Vss is causing the excessive current draw? If so, are they any suggestions to deal with it? We can't re-layout the PCB to add resistors at this point.

    It might be helpful to update the datasheet to state that if the LED pins aren't used and aren't going to be left floating, that the 20kohm resistor should be used.

    Appreciate any feedback.
