EM1402EVM: Active cell balancing issue

Part Number: EM1402EVM

Hi all,

customer wants to apply active balancing, such as EM1402.

Bat. chemistry & stack are Li-Polymer, 14cell, 48V, 64A.

by the way, when in discharge mode during active balancing, the voltage of the external power supply is 24V.

I debugged and improved with attached files.

question)

1) Are there any additional points to improve since the peak to peak is still high?

2) How can you explain the improvements mad by adding diodes?

and isn't it a problem to add?BMS Active balancing waveform.pptx

  • Hi Mike,

Let me start with the diode... you are absolutely correct. Adding that diode will make you lose the ability to balancebidirectionally.

My guess is that it improved the situation because it stops any ringing from happening in the "reverse" or "negative" direction.

Try to add an RC snubber and see if it helps.

Did they also change the magnetics? With 24V you will need a different transformer I think,
