UCC28063: About Inductor current mode (CCM/DCM/CRM)

Hello,

 

Regarding to inductor current mode on UCC28063, my customer is asking a question.　

(Question)

Is DCM or CRM supported on this device?

It seems that there is only description of CCM on datasheet.

Just in case. I'm asking that.

    Hi Tao_2199,

    Thanks for your interest in UCC28063. This controller supports CRM (transition mode). This controller does not support CCM however.

    UCC28063:
    CRM -> Supported.
    CCM -> Not Supported.
    DCM -> Not Supported.
    My understanding is correct?

    Hi Tao2199,

    UCC28063 is designed to operate in CRM mode. It is possible to enter DCM operation at very light load however.

    (1) According to UCC28063 datasheet (page1),it seems that CCM is supported.(Below)

    Is that wrong description? I’m confused ,and which is correct?

     


     

    (2) About switching CRM and DCM on UCC28063.

    Is principle same as UCC2056(UCC2805x)?

    (Below: UCC2056 datasheet,page14)

    Hi Tao_2199,

    The first page is comparing interleaved transition mode PFC to single phase CCM. It is stating that an interleaved transition mode PFC typically has better efficiency than a single phase CCM PFC. UCC28063 supports interleaved transition mode.

    UCC28056 is more of a mixed DCM/TM controller that is designed to operate at light to medium loads in DCM. This is different than UCC28063. UCC28063 has a maximum frequency setting. Going from heavy load to light load, the switching frequency of a transition mode PFC increases. As the load is further decreased, you can hit the maximum frequency setting which will delay the next gate turn on. This delay will result in DCM operation.
