BQ24070: can I use several BQ24070 connected in parallel having common output line to get more current?

Part Number: BQ24070
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61088

Hi. I'm going to build a system based on a RaspberryPi 3+ and powered fom AC-DC power supply. But I also want to have  an UPS for my system using 2-3 18650 cells + BQ24070 for each cell + TPS61088.

Can I use several BQ24070 connected in parallel? or you have more suitable IC for such "ideas"? Thank you.

  • Hello Vlad,
Why are you considering having the BQ24070 in parallel to charge the 18650 cells? Do you need faster charging with higher currents?
  • Hi Raheem
No, charge current is not really important to me. The most important to me is to have high output current, because quick estimation gives 5A at short peaks. So I expect 3 Bq24070 is OK for my system. Moreover my system will have a copcessor that will have a lot of "responsibilities" including control of each cell, counting their capacity and alarming via I2C to RaspPi if any cell is degraded. I wish to have several cells to make my system more robust and I want to be able to control each cell
What do you think? Should I change the concept and use another ICs with higher output current but with a single cell?
    Thank you.
  • Vlad,
We have high efficiency witching chargers that can charge at high currents. If it is possible to use a single battery with high capacity and high output current, you can use a single switching charger to charge it which would remove complexities with your design.
